Throughout the year the Matthews Train Depot and Visitors Center is open. The Train Depot was constructed in the late 1880s. It served as a social and economic beehive for years. Passenger service ended in 1958 but the depot remained in operation until 1966. The train depot stood idle until 1999 when the Town of Matthews purchased it. It was relocated to a prominent location in the Village Green of downtown Matthews. The building was restored and now serves as the home of the Matthews Visitors Center and the Matthews Chamber of Commerce
. A red caboose that is available for the public to visit is adjacent to the Train Depot.
Visit the Matthews Public Library where you will find a unique history mural that tells the story of the Town.
