Matthews, NC – The Town of Matthews recently made significant improvements to the parking lot located in the heart of downtown Matthews, alongside the railroad tracks off of N. Trade Street. The changes make it more pedestrian and motorist friendly.

“With the addition of new restaurants and nightlife, it was a priority for the Town Board of Commissioners and myself to improve our downtown parking to make it easier and safer for pedestrians to get to and from their cars when visiting these establishments,” said Matthews Mayor Jim Taylor. “Our Public Works Department did an excellent job designing and executing this project.”

The upgrades include a new type of pavement resurfacing, installing new pavement markings, adding a colored 10-foot pedestrian walkway, adding stairs to access Bank Street, repairing and capping the stacked stone wall, improving the landscaping and drainage, and adding landscape lighting on the raised planter. The parking lot is now one-way from N. Trade to Ames Street due to the new angled parking configurations."

In 2016, the North Carolina General Assembly allocated $94,240 nonrecurring grant funds to Matthews for a downtown revitalization project. The Town of Matthews already had $72,000 allocated in the Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) for this work. Combining these two funds enabled the Town to fully implement the vision of the Downtown Master plan for the parking lot. The entire project will come in under the allocated amount.
