Welcome: The members of the Matthews Police Department welcome the opportunity to hear from you - what's going on in your neighborhood or business, and what we can do to make our community safer. Please let us know if you cannot find the information you're looking for or to provide feedback about this site or about members of our department.
The Matthews Police Department is staffed by approximately 85 full and part-time employees. We are aided in our mission by more than 25 dedicated citizen volunteers. Generally serving in one of four service divisions - Administration, Criminal Investigations, Patrol, and Support Services - our staff is committed to providing the highest level of service possible to our citizens. While our employees' work shifts vary from 8 to 12 hours, many still volunteer to assist organizations like Safe Kids, our Police Explorer' Post and the Lunch Buddies Program at our local elementary schools.
The shared Mission of our staff is simple, but focused - "The members of the Matthews Police Department strive to promote a safe community by preventing crimes and reducing the fear of crime by our citizens, while treating all individuals fairly and with respect. Our members will demonstrate knowledge, courage and integrity while building partnerships necessary to enhance the safety of our community."
We recognize, however, that our members alone cannot keep our community safe - this requires the support and assistance of all members of our community. Through our Neighborhood Watch and Business Safety programs, our Child Safety partners, and especially the dedicated members of our Citizens Volunteer Corp, our goal is to establish partnerships throughout our community. We challenge you to get involved!
The Matthews Police Department is here to make the exchanges of your Internet and personal purchases safe. We encourage our citizens NOT to to invite unknown subjects to your home or to meet in locations where you may be alone or unobserved. Just simply provide our address and either meet in our front parking lot or in our lobby. Both areas are under 24/7 video surveillance and employees are present at all times.
We are pleased to announce that we are now on Nextdoor! Our goal is to keep individual neighborhoods informed of crime information and safety tips, as well as help citizens have another outlet to give us information in our community partnership. If you have any questions please contact Officer Tim Aycock at: firstname.lastname@example.org or 704-841-6754.
The members of the Matthews Police are saddened to report the passing of retired officer K.D. 'Kathy' McGirt this past Friday. Officer McGirt served the Matthews community, as it's first-ever female police officer, from 1978 until her retirement in 2000, at which time she was serving as the department's first-ever School Resource Officer. Kathy will forever be remembered for her care for our profession and especially her passion for the well-being of children.
A service to honor and celebrate Kathy's life and service will be held this Saturday morning (28th) at 11:00am at Davidson's Funeral Home in Lexington, N.C. Kathy's family states that one of her final wishes was to ask that, in lieu of flowers, to consider a donation to the Matthews Police Department in care of it's DARE and School Resource program.
