The N.C. Department of Transportation proposes to widen Idlewild Road to a multi-lane, median-divided roadway approximately 500 feet west of Barney Drive to Rockwell Drive, modify the existing I-485 interchange with a “Diverging Diamond” interchange (DDI), and construct a roundabout at the intersection of Idlewild Road and Stallings Road, in Mecklenburg and Union Counties.

The purpose of this project is to provide additional traffic carrying capacity along Idlewild Road, provide accommodations for bicycles and pedestrians, and provide improvements for the intersections at Stallings Road, Steven Mills Road, and the I-485 interchange.

A public meeting is scheduled for:
Thursday July 25, 2019
4-7 p.m.
Poplin Elementary School
5627 Poplin Road
Indian Trail

The purpose of this meeting is to inform the public of the project and gather input on the proposed design. Click here for more information.

In conjunction with this meeting, the Town of Matthews will host a public input session (same time and location) on the Stevens Creek Nature Preserve. The Town of Matthews is undertaking a small area study to look at enhancing access to the Stevens Creek Nature Preserve. The subarea plan to be developed by the Town and VHB consultant team will focus on opportunities for bicyclists and pedestrians to access the Preserve, primarily through connections to existing greenway, sidewalk and bike facilities. The study will recommend active transportation network improvements, both as stand-alone projects and as incidental improvements as part of roadway projects.

The study team will be holding a drop-in public input session for the Stevens Creek Subarea Study on Thursday, July 25, from 4-7 PM as part of NCDOT public input session for Idlewild Road Widening (U-4913) at the Poplin Elementary School, 5627 Poplin Road, Indian Trail. Please come by and share your feedback regarding opportunities and concerns for this study to take into account.
