On Thursday, October 25, 2018, at approximately 4:14 A.M., Matthews Police officers responded to the Sam’s Mart located at 668 W. John St. in reference to an Armed Robbery.  The store clerk reported that a black male had entered the store and demanded money while pointing a handgun at him.  As the suspect left the store, he reportedly got into an awaiting silver Lexus SUV that was being driven by a black male.  As the call came in from Sam’s Mart to report this robbery, Matthews Police Telecommunicators were simultaneously receiving information from CMPD that a stolen silver Lexus SUV had been used in Charlotte to commit a string of robberies.  After receiving this information, investigators identified the vehicle used as a 2004 Lexus RX330.  There were no injuries reported from this incident.

At approximately 4:36 A.M. on this same day, a silver Lexus SUV RX330 with two black male passengers was involved in a traffic crash in Lancaster County, S.C. in which the driver was killed.  The passenger was transported to the hospital to receive treatment for his injuries.  After further investigation by S.C. Highway Patrol, it was discovered that this was the stolen vehicle from Charlotte and had been used in the reported armed robberies in Charlotte and Matthews.

The deceased driver was identified as Mr. Rontavious Shawn Clark of Charlotte, NC (DOB – 11/13/1992)

The passenger was identified as Mr. Danneil Elijah Hughes of Charlotte, NC (DOB – 06/20/1995)

Matthews Police Department has charged Mr. Hughes with Armed Robbery and a warrant for his arrest has been issued from the Mecklenburg County Magistrate's Office.
