Matthews Mayor Paul Bailey issued the following statement regarding the fatal shooting of one student at Butler High School this morning:
 

Matthews, NC - Matthews Mayor Paul Bailey issued the following statement regarding the fatal shooting of one student at Butler High School this morning:

"We are deeply saddened by the tragic events at Butler High School this morning. I want to extend my deepest condolences to the family and friends of this young man, and to everyone affected at Butler High School. Our hearts are with you, and the community stands behind you. This is a very sad day here in Matthews.

"I want to commend the Matthews Police Department for their excellent work. MPD responded immediately, apprehended the suspect, and secured the school. I'd also like to thank Matthews Fire & EMS, the Mint Hill Police Department, CMS Police, and Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department who all assisted this morning. 

"I want to thank Butler High School officials, and Principal LeGrand, as well as CMS officials and Superintendent Wilcox. Our agencies all worked together to ensure the school campus was secured while police investigated the shooting."
