On Monday October 29, 2018 at approximately 7:14 A.M., the Butler High School Resource Officer notified Matthews Police Headquarters that a student had been shot and requested medic to respond along with additional officers to assist.  The suspected gunman was taken into custody a short time later and was identified as Mr. Jatwan Craig Cuffie (DOB - 07/17/2002).  He was transported to the Mecklenburg County Intake Center and is being charged with First Degree Murder.

The victim was transported to CMC Main by Medic, but unfortunately, succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.  The victim was identified as Mr. Bobby McKeithen (DOB - 10/10/2002).  After the scene was secured by police and statements gathered from witnesses, the Butler students were safely returned to their families.

This is still an ongoing investigation and additional information will be provided when it becomes available.

We would like to thank CMPD, CMS Police, Mint Hill Police, several federal law enforcement agencies and our local community partners for their much appreciated assistance today during this tragedy.

We want to stress to all students to please say something if you see something

Suspect - Cuffie
