At approximately 11:30 AM on this date, the Matthews Police Department received a report of a deceased person located down an embankment along side of the road in the 1800 block of E. John Street. The body had been discovered by a worker that was conducting roadside cleanup. Matthews’ police officers and investigators responded to the scene and were able to confirm there was a decomposed body near the roadside. A damaged bicycle was also found nearby.
At this time it appears the remains are of an adult white male; however, the identity of the deceased person is unknown. Due to the level of decomposition of the body, it is believed that it had been at the location for several weeks. The cause of death is also unknown at this time and is currently being investigated by the Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner.
The Matthews Police Department is asking for the public’s assistance with trying to identify the victim and provide any information that may help establish the circumstances leading to this death. This person was wearing light brown work boots, blue jeans and a multi colored coat with a distinctive print. A photo of the actual coat’s print scheme is attached. The bicycle that was located is a Huffy brand, purple and silver in color. Anyone that may have information about this case is asked to contact the Matthews Police Department at 704-847-5555.
