In preparation for this year’s annual Matthews Alive festival, the Matthews Police Department would like to announce road closures, along with some safety tips and general event information.

We are tasked with planning and providing the security for Matthews Alive, which our staff regularly evaluates from previous years to decide if there are any needed changes.  This is to ensure that we are consistently evolving as additional needs arise regarding security measures.  We will also be partnering this year with the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office to assist our staff in patrolling the festival.

“To have an event that provides family entertainment, food, and fun while at the same time raising money to put directly back into the community is what Matthews is all about.” Said Matthews Police Chief Clark A. Pennington.  “And with that, we want our citizens, visitors, and vendors to be assured that all security measures possible are being taken to ensure everyone continues to have a safe and fun time at Matthews Alive.”

Road Closures

On Friday, August 30, 2019, at 9:00 a.m., South Trade St. will be closed from the intersection of East John St. to McDowell St.  Starting at 5:00 p.m. on this same day, this closure will be extended to Main St.  This entire closure will reopen by 11:30 p.m. on Monday, September 2, 2019.  Please plan on delays ahead of time if you will be traveling in this area over the four scheduled days of the festival.  We ask that you please drive extra cautious as there will be thousands of additional pedestrians in the downtown area walking to and from the festival.

Safety Tips

  • Stay hydrated
  • Wear sunscreen
  • Protect yourself from theft by keeping items of value out of sight and on your person. (e.g. cash, cell phone)
  • Make sure those new shoes that look so cute on you are actually comfortable to walk long distances in
  • Try to pack as light as possible without carrying extra bags or items with you that will make it more difficult to walk for long distances in the heat
