On Wednesday, November 13, 2019, at approximately 9:44 a.m., Matthews officers from the Patrol Division responded to the 600 block of S. Trade St. regarding a traffic crash. It was reported to officers that a vehicle was traveling northbound on S. Trade St. when it struck another vehicle from behind, then struck a second vehicle from behind before leaving the roadway and hitting a utility pole. Two of the three drivers were transported to area hospitals by Medic for treatment.
This crash caused a significant power outage in the area to include traffic lights at several intersections. S. Trade St. was immediately closed between Main St. and Fullwood Ln. until the Matthews Fire Department and Duke Energy crews could access safety concerns regarding the broken utility pole. At approximately 11:05 a.m., the roadway was reopened and at approximately 11:45 a.m., power was restored.
This crash is still under investigation with no charges filed at this time.
