June 17, 2020 (UPDATE)

The Matthews Police Department is pleased to announce the arrest of two individuals in a homicide which occurred on June 07, 2020 at the Holiday Inn Express in Matthews.  On June 15, 2020 Audrey Marie Medina was arrested at the Matthews Police Department.  On June 16, 2020 Daniel Tyler Parker was arrested by the CMPD – VCAT in Charlotte.  Both have been charged with 1st Degree Murder.   

During the investigation it was found that the victim, David Funches (DOB – 05/25/1987) of Charlotte, and the two suspects became involved in an altercation within one of the rooms at the hotel.  The confrontation resulted in the victim being shot multiple times by the suspects.  As a result of these gunshot wounds, Mr. Funches died at the hospital.   After a thorough and extensive review of all available evidence collected, including witness statements, Matthews Detectives presented their findings to the Mecklenburg County Magistrate’s Office and arrest warrants were issued.  Both suspects are in the custody of the Mecklenburg County Jail.

On Sunday, June 7, 2020, at approximately 12:36 a.m., Matthews officers were dispatched to the Holiday Inn Express located at 9420 E. Independence Blvd. regarding a report of shots fired.  Upon their arrival, they found two men that were each suffering from gunshot wounds that were transported to the hospital for medical treatment.  Sadly, one of the men was later pronounced deceased.

All of the initial witness statements and corroborating evidence collected by Detectives indicate that this was an isolated incident between the parties on-scene and that there is no further threat to the community.

This is an active ongoing investigation with no charges filed thus far.
